About This Item
London: Michael Joseph,, 1976. First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the title page, "To Stephen, with best wishes, James Herriot". James Herriot was the pen name of James Alfred Wight (1916-1995), a country veterinary surgeon serving Yorkshire farmers for some 50 years, beginning in 1937. He is best known as the author of a series of eight books about veterinary practice, animals, and their owners. Set in the Yorkshire Dales of the 1930s to 1950s, it began with If Only They Could Talk (1970). The series was adapted for television as All Creatures Great and Small. Octavo. Original black boards, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Line-drawing illustrations to the text. Spine cocked, head bumped, edges foxed, internally clean; unclipped jacket edges a little creased: a very good copy in like jacket.
