First edition, with the earliest ads and in BAL's earliest state of the binding. Frontispiece with tissue guard (foxed). 4 (ads), 144 pp. 12mo (18 x 11.3 cm). Hawthorne and Pierce were classmates and close friends at Bowdoin, and both were members of the progressive literary group, the Athenian Society.
