About This Item

[Jerusalem, Israel]: Yad Vashem, Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority, 1965. 1st edition, 4to, original boards. 439 pages; 29 cm. Includes tables of localities and the number of Jewish residents. Leading Holocaust historian Martin Gilbert singled out this work in his acknowledgements to his Never AgainA History of the Holocaust , noting that "Every historian of the Holocaust owes a debt of gratitude to the work of those who have assembled the basic documentation, without which no account, however short, can be compiled. More than twenty thousand Jewish communities—large and small—were destroyed in Europe between 1940 and 1945. The task of listing their names and giving the number of Jews living in the communities before the war was undertaken after the war by Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem, and published in 1965 as Blackbook of Localities Whose Jewish Population was Exterminated by the Nazis"
(Universe Publishing, 2000). From the preface: "On the 20th of November 1964, the German Federal Government appealed to the world at large to place at its disposal any material concerning crimes and their perpetration which has hitherto been outside the knowledge of the Federal Republic. It will report to the Bundestag early in March on the progress made in the investigation of crimes which may have come to light in the meantime, so that further consideration can be given to the question of extending the period of prescription.... The present book demonstrates how inadequate investigation has been so far."
