About This Item
Wellington: George Didsbury: Government Printer, 1880. viii, 232 pp. First Edition. Octavo. Original green cloth, ruled and lettered in gilt on the spine and cover. Orange endpapers. Text block in good condition. Light foxing to the extremities. Former owner's signature on the title page. Reverend William Wyatt Gill (1828 â 1896) was an English missionary who worked in Australia and the South Pacific region. In this volume, Gill recorded indigenous myths and songs. He noted that while myth and history must be carefully distinguished, when hostile groups agreed on a specific narrative, he believed that it had significance. There are also chapters exploring "female treachery," sin and punishment. 1880
