About This Item

New York: Exposition Press, 1959. Novel of a working-class Black man, son of a loveless marriage, whose innate anger, goaded by racism, leads to his downfall, despite heroic military service in World War Two. Davis, born & educated in South Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C., was a clergyman and Army Chaplain; this is (as far as we can determine) his only published novel, which, like those of many Black writers in the nascent civil rights era, failed to break through to wide acclaim. While some cataloguers refer to Exposition Press as a 'vanity press' (authors paid to have their work published), the gatekeeping of white publishers often left Black authors no other choice. Rather than reflecting the interests & concerns of such publishers, and perhaps of less 'literary' merit, these scarce publications show the deep interests of Black writers of the period. Hardcover in jacket. Light wear to book, bookplate on free endsheet; jacket shows a little edgewear, minor chipping, some rubbing; pages lightly tanned. Text clean; 175 pages.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Octavo.
