Spine and rear panel also with gilt title and ornamentation. Binding designed by Marcus Behmer and bound by Hübel und Denck. Upper edges gilt. Housed in the original hard paper folder. One of the most beautiful examples of the 20th century German book art.


Signed by Max Liebermann (1847-1935) the German-Jewish impressionist painter and printmaker who created 21 fine lithographs for the book. Three of his illustrations are full page, and the first "Effi auf der Schaukel" (Effie on the Swing) is signed in pencil.


Published as the annual gift for the members of the Maximilian-Gesellschaft, the association of German bibliophiles.
