Pure Logic and Other Minor Works by W. [William] Stanley Jevons - Edited by Robert Adamson and Harriet A. Jevons - 1890

A rebound First Edition of William Jevons' collected essays on logic published eight years after his death in 1882. Ex-Belfast (Linen Hall) Library with their plates on the front endpapers and occasional plain embossed library stamps to the text.

Presented in two sections - Part 1 comprising four of Jevons' writings on the theory of logic (written between 1864 and 1870) and Part 2 comprising his examination of John Stuart Mill's philosophy - please see our photographs for the full contents list.

An acclaimed economist, statistician and logician, William Jevons was the first economist to define the theory of "marginal" (or "final") utility in his "The Theory Of Political Economy" (1871).

Physical Description: Hardback, 8vo (approx 9 x 5.5 inches / 23 x 14.5cm), xxiii + [ii + blank] + 299 + [1] pages with all four mono plates illustrating the mechanism of "the Logical Abacus" (otherwise known as the "Logic Piano" - a very early mechanical computer).

External Condition: Moderate to significant general wear and soiling to the brown morocco boards and spine, heavy browning to spine with gilt lettering only just legible, browning / dusting to text block edges (fore and bottom edges untrimmed).

Internal Condition: Securely bound with boards firmly attached and text block sound (front hinge paper just beginning to split), a couple pages opened a little roughly with some occasional paper edge chips and short closed tears, lengthy closed tear to page 263 / 264 (no loss but text slightly affected - repaired with archive quality document film), intermittent mostly light (very occasionally moderate) internal soiling and reading creases / pressure marks but overall internally Good in a very clear and easily readable condition throughout.
