Handsomely bound in the original red pebble-grained cloth (imitation leather), with blind-stamped rectangular borders and gilt titles on the front cover and spine. On the cover are gold-stamped images of the sphinx (sphynx) and a pyramid. All gilt stamping is still bright and shiny. Original yellow (silk?) endpapers are a bit speckled but all other pages are creamy white, clean and unmarked with NO foxing. NO owner's name or bookplate. No date of publication (but copyright 1898). Hinges are perfect. Oblong Hardcover. 11" wide by 8" tall. All edges gilt. This souvenir photo-album has 109 leaves, mostly printed on the rectos only (i.e. versos are usually blank). Most of the photos are full-page. "was the first person who proposed to the learned world the hypothesis of four collateral dynasties of Egyptian kings, reigning at the same time over different districts of that country; in order to reduce the extravagant chronology of the Egyptian records to a conformity with that of the Hebrew Scriptures. His journal of the excursion covers his discoveries giving special attention to the Egyptian pyramids and the Great Sphinx. La Croix was a professor of geography in Lyon whose work on Africa became a lasting authority of African geography and history. However, much of La Croix's "Afrique" was heavily inspired by Dutch author Olfert Dapper's "Description of Africa".
Even still, La Croix's work is notable for the exquisite full-page and folding engravings as well as descriptions of some of the greatest mysteries of Africa including a section on Egyptian pyramids, the Sphinx, and mummies!
