I must confess that I had never heard of Edward R Sill before picking this book up. Now that I think of it I don't remember any of the details of how this book came in to my possession. And it matters not a bit. It's been sitting on my shelf for years I assume. I probably got it because it is physically attractive to me in it's size (small) and it's basic lack of any and all artifice. Eventually I did crack it and what I discovered was a pleasantly unadorned essay entitled "Our Tame Hummingbirds" This is the first story in the book after the Introduction. Mr.Sill writes in a first person missive style that made me think of the letters that my parents and grand-parents used to write to me. Observation, and introspection are teamed up in a way which is homespun and yet erudite. One moment he's just a guy sitting on a bench in the garden with his spouse debating the parental efficacy of of a bird in a nest. Next he is quoting out of Shakespeare. Mr. Sill is probably not what most people in 2017 would be digging into for reading material; however I am a treasurer hunter. I dig in the free piles and the used book stores for gold. I also dig deep into the record piles for audio gold. It's part of the fun of reading and listening. I haven't read much past "Our Tame Hummingbirds" in "The Prose Of Edward Rowland Hill" I plan to though, and that is an indication of me being inspired by this work. William Rodney Buffalo
