Salmon Summer

Every summer the salmon return to spawn in the streams of Kodiak Island, Alaska, and nine-year-old Alex, a native Aleut, comes here to fish with his family as his ancestors did. The abundant salmon are a source of food for the bears, eagles, foxes, magpies, gulls, and best of all, Alex's family. Bruce McMillan lived with the Shugak family at their fishing camp in Moser Bay, Kodiak Island. Here, with his Alaskan native hosts, he ate smoked salmon, salmon-berries, and tamuuq.
