About This Item
London & New York: Whittaker and Co., 1896. First edition of this notable book on transformers, their use & engineering, previously "somewhat neglected...[in] what may be termed the literature of heavy electrical engineering"; intended more for practical engineers than scientists. Kapp was an influential engineer & later teacher at the University of Birmingham, where he became the first Chair of Electrical Engineering, developing the basis for calculations and construction of large alternating current motors, dynamos, and transformers; he also wrote on electric power transmission, alternating current, dynamos and alternators, winning Telford Medals in 1885/6 and 1888/9. Hardcover. Book shows some wear, bumped corners, minor scratches; rubberstamp and ink name of Herbert T. Hills of Salt Lake City on free endsheet - Hills was an early graduate of the University of Utah's engineering department who worked for the US Surveyor General before meeting his death in 1905 at the age of 29 in a freak accident: he picked up a steel surveying tape which was in contact with a live wire bringing current to a disused mine and was instantly electrocuted. Text clean; xii, 241 pages; index, many figures.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Small Octavo.
