About This Item
Rutland, Vermont and Tokyo: Charles E. Tuttle Company. Very Good. 1958. Softcover. Stated third printing, 1958. A portfolio of the art of Toshusai Sharaku who was active from 1794 to 1795, known for his ukiyo-e prints. Little is known about the artist, who made stunning woodblock prints of Kabuki actors. When first made public, the art met with disapproval but is now considered some of the finest in the ukiyo-e category. The artworks are presented in both black & white and color; many of which fold out. 48 plates, 30 in full color. Text rendered into English by Paul C. Blum, from the original Japanese text of Ichitaro Kondo. --- A softcover edition, with French flaps. Volume 2 in the series: "Kodansha Library of Japanese Art". --- Volume is sound and remains tightly-bound, but with age-toning to leaves and covers & with some creasing to spine.; 16mo (6 to 7 in. tall) .
