About This Item

New York: Design Press, 1989. First English Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 4to 11" - 13" tall. Translated into English from the original German by Ingrid Li, a magnum opus of social history and deep typographical analysis of handwriting and calligrahy. The color photographs drawn from the work of German students in handwriting seminars and calligraphy workshops from the University of Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany, have greatly augmented this tome. According to the publisher, Andersch "makes visible the process of teaching and learning" the various scripts, his philosophy and methods expounded in italic side-notes, quite accessible and interesting. Full index, bibliography, and glossary. German books on book-arts galore. Sterling condition hardcover copy, with unbruised tips, tight binding, and clean internals, showing only very slight shelf- and edge-wear; not ex-library, with neither underlining nor highlighting anywhere. Bound handsomely in a tall quarto format, oatmeal cloth over boards. Measures 8 1/2" x 12 1/2" in width and height, respectively. Bright and shiny dust jacket, illustrated, showing only very minor wear, protected by a plastic coat, dust jacket not being price-clipped. Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. Hundreds of gorgeous reproductions in black-and-white and duotone, monochrome and full color. [3], 4-255 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
