About This Item

NY: Putnam Adult, 1995. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine. The uncommon softcover uncorrected proof. A near fine copy in off-white wraps with blue lettering. Sylvia Earle (b. 1935) is a standout marine biologist, oceanographer and explorer, often described as a Rachel Carson of the oceans. She has been a National Geographic explorer-in-residence since 1998, was the first female chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and was named by Time Magazine as its first Hero for the Planet in 1998. Among many, many other accolades, she has won the Rachel Carson Award from the National Audubon Society and the Carl Sagan Award for Public Understanding of Science. Sea Change "is an enthusiastic celebration of that diversity and abundance [of the marine world]. It's also a profoundly sobering account of the shortsighted human assault on ocean life. The 'silent tide,' as one reviewer wrote, may lie just offshore." Blurbs by E.O. Wilson and Jane Goodall among others. An important woman in science and biology.

Synopsis

Called "Her Deepness" by The New Yorker and New York Times , Sylvia Earle is a marine biologist, author, lecturer, and scientific consultant, chairman of Sea Change Trust and the Caribbean Marine Research Center, co-founder and director of Deep Ocean Engineering, Inc., president of Deep Ocean Exploration and Research, Inc., director of Dresser Industries, Inc., and formerly the Chief Scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.  Currently, she is Research Associate in Botany at the Smithsonian Institution.  Her research concerns the ecology of marine ecosystems, with special reference to marine plants, and the development of technology for access and research in the deep sea. Holder of several diving records, author of more than ninety scientific, technical, and popular publications, Dr. Earle has a B.S. from Florida State University, and M.A. and a Ph.D. from Duke University, and six honorary doctorates.  She lives in Oakland, California, and in oceans everywhere.

About Rural Hours

Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
