About This Item

London: J. M. Dent & Sons. Good with no dust jacket. 1936. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. In greeny cloth-covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine. No dust jacket. The cloth is very 'patchy' with quite a few darker green areas but the gilt titling is bright. All hinges tight. The book is in a protective clear - removable - bookfilm plastic cover and looks better now. The page fore-edges are 'toned' /browning with age, with some very light 'spotting' (pale small foxing). A former owner's name (J. B. Thomas) in ink on the front pastedown - whether it is THE J. B. G. Thomas of the Western Mail I can't say for certain - it doesn't look like the 60s /70s signature, but it does look like that of a young man - and as this book was published in 1936 when he would have been exactly that - so? ? . Internally no major marks, a little light yellowing/offsetting to the endpapers and some very occasional scattered foxing (light yellow-brown spotting and patching) mainly to the gutters, but generally internally this is a clean, tight and bright copy. (xii) + 223 pages B/w portrait frontispiece of the Author, Captain Walelam. Plus the full page illustrations (unpaginated) = 17 pages of b/w photographs, and 11 b/w diagrams/line drawings in the text. This is in the Series 'Modern Sports'. Edited by Howard Marshall. Basically a 'How to play' in depth book by one of the early 'Greats', with some history of the game from the early 1800s onwards and with earlier and contemporary info on the players and the game. Overall a good, sound copy, but minor faults as noted above, and the possibility of this having belonged to a Rugby Journalism 'Great'? . See Images. ; Modern Sports. Edited by Howard Marshall; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
