The first illustrated edition of this collection of poetry by Irish poet Thomas Townshend, bound in a half-calf binding and illustrated with several engravings. First Illustrated Edition. Illustrated with fourteen heading engravings and fourteen smaller tailpiece engravings, taken from the work of English painter Thomas Stothard (1755-1834).Bound in a contemporary half-calf binding on marbled boards. This is a lovely collection of poetry by Thomas Townshend, also known as 'Thomas of Gray's Inn. Townshend was a native of Cork, Ireland, and published a variety of political pamphlets. As a member of the Irish parliament, he was able to correspond with Edmund Burke in 1796. Contents include the 'Elfin Eclogues', 'Ode to Music', 'Ode to Love', and 'Notes on the Ode to Music'. Collated, lacks the engraved frontispiece that is present in other copies. Bound in a contemporary half-calf binding on marbled boards. Externally, smart. Rubbing and wear to the extremities and the spine, as well as along the joints. A few marks to boards. Front hinge is starting but remains firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with light age-toning to the pages of text. Very Good
