About This Item
THIS IS AN EXTREMELY RARE VOLUME FROM 1894: IT IS VOLUME 2 OF A LIMITED EDITION OF 1500. THE SHEER VOLUME OF ILLUSTRATIONS IS STAGGERING: 5 DOUBLE-PAGE AND 2 SINGLE-PAGE ILLUSTRATIONS, INTENSELY ILLUSTRATED CHAPTER HEADINGS AND TOO MANY MULTIPLE ORNAMENTAL INITIALS, HEADPIECES, AND IN-TEXT DECORATIONS TO COUNT. BEARDSLEY'S SENSUOUS AND DECADENT STYLE WAS INSPIRATIONAL AND INFLUENCED MANY ILLUSTRATORS THEN AND NOW.
THIS COPY IS IN USED BUT SOUND CONDITION. POSSIBLY RE-CASED IN THE ORIGINAL BINDING, THERE ARE NO DAMAGED PAGES, INSCRIPTIONS, OR OTHER MARKS. THE COVERS HAVE MODERATE TO HEAVY OVERALL SOIL. END PAGES ARE FOXED BUT MOST OTHER PAGES ARE UNAFFECTED AND ONLY SLIGHTLY AGED. THERE IS EDGEWEAR AND A LITTLE LOSS TO HEAD AND HEEL OF SPINE. THE REPAIRED FRONT HINGE SHOWS A LITTLE WEBBING ALONG THE GUTTER WHERE THERE HAS BEEN A SMALL LOSS OF COVER CLOTH, BUT IS FIRM. THE INNER FRONT HINGE HAS A CLOTH TAPE REPAIR BUT IS SOUND. THE REAR ENDPAPERS ARE INTACT; THE TEXT BLOCK IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION.
THIS IS A USED BUT COMPLETE COPY OF A VERY SCARCE FIRST LIMITED EDITION, WITH UNFORGETTABLY STRIKING ILLUSTRATIONS BY AUBREY
BEARDSLEY.
