About This Item

New York: Conde Nast Books, Random House, 1989. First edition, the deluxe issue in decorated boards and slipcase, with house-shaped bookplate SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, MARK HAMPTON. Extensively illustrated both with plates in colour and with tinted illustrations within the text. Large 8vo, in the original boards colourfully decorated in a wallpaper motif and backed in green cloth, the upper cover lettered in black, the spine in gilt, in the original green cloth slipcase. 251pp. A very fine copy, as new. The slipcase is also in very fine condition. THE BETTER OF THE TWO FIRST EDITION FORMATS, AND WITH MARK HAMPTON'S SIGNATURE ON PASTE-DOWN PLATE. ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST HAS CALLED HAMPTON "ONE OF THE WORLD'S 20 GREATEST DESIGNERS OF ALL TIME."
This elegantly produced book, delightfully illustrated on virtually every page-spread, contains a collection of his essays from sources such as his popular 'House & Garden columns as well as nine new chapters written specifically for this publication. Hampton's knowledge of colour, space, and arrangements shines throughout, but it is his wit and style that makes this a truly fun, and informative, read.
