About This Item
London: Bickers & Son , 1890. Leather. Very Good. 8.5" by 5.5". None stated . The new edition of Maxwell's illustrated biography of the Duke of Wellington, in a Bickers full calf prize binding. The new edition. Illustrated with a monochrome portrait frontispiece, headpieces, illuminated letters and twelve monochrome plates, including a folding plan. Collated complete. Bound in a full calf prize binding with a gilt crest from 'The Abbey School Beckenham' to the front board. Bound by Bickers & Son with their binder's stamp to the front blank. This condensed version of Maxwell's detailed work offers a popular account of the general, famed for his superior defensive tactics in the Napoleonic wars. Although predominantly Maxwell's work, the new edition has been altered where new information has arisen, and the editor has added short chapter on the political career of the Duke, who served as Conservative prime minister between 1828 and 1830, and briefly again in 1834. Maxwell claimed to have served at the Peninsular campaign and the Battle of Waterloo himself, but this is generally believed to be untrue. Bound in a full calf prize binding with a gilt crest from 'The Abbey School Beckenham' to the front board. Externally very smart with slight fading to the spine, bumping and rubbing to the extremities, rubbing to the joints and minor marks to the boards. Bookplate belonging to 'T. Y. Elsden' to the rear pastedown. Internally firmly bound with generally bright pages with the odd spot, heavier to the front and rear. Old ink inscription to the front blank. Very Good
