About This Item
London: Edward Moxon, 1858. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8" by 5.5". None. The first edition of these two volumes on the life of poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, written by Thomas Jefferson Hogg. Two volumes. First edition. Each volume is illustrated with an in-text etching to the rear of the text, volume one contains a frontispiece. Collated complete. Volume two has a portrait of Mrs Shelley pasted to the endpaper as if it were a frontispiece. These two volumes were all that were published of the author's project to detail the full life of Percy Bysshe Shelley in a four volume set. Volume three was never finished and volume four was never written as the author died before completion. They are now considered a scarce set. The life of Percy Bysshe Shelley, an English Romantic poet known as radical in his poetry as well as in his political and social views. Written by Thomas Jefferson Hogg, an British barrister and writer best known for his friendship with Percy Bysshe Shelley and their collaboration on several literary projects during their time at University College, Oxford. Original black cloth binding rebacked onto contemporary black cloth. Externally, smart with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine. The odd mark to the board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper. Previous owner's bookplate to the front endpaper. Very Good
