About This Item
London: Andre Deutsch. 1972. Qaurto, 2 vols., in slipcase. First volume quarter-cloth in marbled boards, profusely illustrated in b&w throughout, pp. 256. Second volume patterned paper wraps, identical content, pp. 256 (intended as the reading copy). Minor edgewear to the paper wraps volume, o/w both are in near-fine condition. Slipcase has a few small marks, some fishina and is slightly worn to edges. One of a limited edition of 2000 copies. In 1763 John Wilkes set up a printing press in his house to print An Essay on Woman, a pornographic parody of Popeâs Essay on Man. The thirteen copies he planned were destined for friends and members of the Hellfire Club. Wilkesâs political enemies obtained some proofs. The fragment was read in the House of Lords, who moved to expel and try Wilkes. He fled to Paris and asserted that the poem was never âpublished,â only printed for private circulation. Nevertheless, he was tried and found guilty in absentia of obscene and seditious libel and declared an outlaw. [Lewd & Scandalous books: Monash Uni] Limited Ed..
