A two volume facsimile edition of this important eighteenth century work.'The History and Antiquities of the Exchequer of the Kings of England' traces the administrations and records of the branches of Exchequer from the Norman Conquest to the reign of Edward II.It is a critical work, looking at history, and ancient law in England. However the author doesn't simply study the records, but notes the development of the institution over centuries.After its publication, this became the standard work of English medieval history.The author, Thomas Madox, started collecting materials for this work in 1697, and took his resources from a great variety of sources.With the inscription of Derek Keene to front pastedowns. Keene was a prominent English urban historian, who brought together history, archaeology and geography to investigate how people in the past experienced life in cities such as London. The project that generated most excitement was his work in the 1980s and 90s on the townscape and society of medieval London.With the bookplate of Eric Poole to each front pastedown In the publisher's original cloth bindings.
