About This Item

Washington, D.C.: Neale Publishing Company, 1901. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Sam C. Dunham. 16mo. Pp. 80. Blue-green cloth, titles and author illustration stamped in gilt on the cover, titles on the spine. Owner ink stamp on endpapers, gift inscription dated Christmas 1907. Verses expressing sentiments excluded from his official reports on assignments in Northern Alaska with the Department of Labor (1897-98) and the Twelfth Census (1899-1900). Each composition is followed with a date and location.

The gift inscription, to a Seldovia school teacher, is from H. L. Faulkner, sheriff, U.S. Marshall and attorney. In 1909, while serving as a U.S. Marshall based in Juneau, Faulkner arrested Robert Stroud for his first murder. After subsequent murders, Stroud gained fame, or infamy, as the Birdman of Alcatraz. Faulkner went on to earn a law degree and fulfilled a successful career representing Alaska mining concerns.
