About This Item
Boston: Charles Ewer, 1819. First American edition, thick 8vo, pp. 1006; text in double column; full contemporary calf, black morocco label on spine; extremities a little chipped and joints tender, else a good copy or better. Early ownership signature of "B. B. Wisner." Benjamin Blydenberg Wisner (1794-1835) was Secretary of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Crabb (1778-1851) "commenced the study of medicine, but being unable to endure the dissecting room resigned his medical studies to become assistant to a bookseller" (DNB) and wrote a number of legal digests and schoolbooks. His English Synonyms was perhaps his most successful work, and in one form or another remains in print today. American Imprints 47740; Vancil, p. 62.
