Description: The publisher's blurb reads: ''For more than two hundred years, historians either have dismissed Anne Hutchinson as a troublemaker or relegated her to a footnote. Yet Anne Hutchinson showered the seventeenth century with ideas and actions so radical that the twentieth century is still struggling to implement them. Born in England, Anne immigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634, when she and her husband joined the Puritan minister John Cotton and his followers. In New England, the outspoken Anne quickly ran afoul of the colony's basic distrust of women. When she realized that women were to be excluded from colonial affairs, she began holding meetings for women to discuss religious and practical matters. Her strongly expressed belief in the individual soon attracted the businessmen of the colony, who also chafed under the authoritarianism of the Puritan church and local government. By 1637, Anne had a larger following than did Governor John Winthrop. Brought to trial for her views, she found a forum to address the entire colony, England, and posterity. In this biography, Anne clearly emerges as a feminist before her time, a champion of individual liberty, and a significant figure in American history.''
