About This Item
San Francisco: Jossey-Bass Publishers, 1993. Hardcover. Small 4to. Black cloth with silver spine lettering, pictorial dust jacket. xxx, 260pp. Fine/fine. Superb, pristine, tight first edition -- and an exceptional presentation copy, being inscribed boldly by the author in black fineline on half-title page "For Adlai Stevenson / -- with admiration, / in friendship -- / Harlan / 16 April 1993." Interestingly, Stevenson's father, Governor Adlai E. Stevenson II, is mentioned briefly in this book; also interesting is that Stevenson's great-grandfather, Adlai I (1838-1914), served as vice president (1893-97) under Grover Cleveland, to whom Harlan Cleveland was distantly related! Harlan Cleveland (1918-2008) was a diplomat, scholar, educator and author. From the collection of Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), U.S. Senator from Illinois (1969-81).
