About This Item

New York: Privately Printed, 1921. First Printing. Hardcover. Good. Small 8vo, cloth backed boards in marbled slipcase, book good, light wear and soil, and some warping to the lower portion of the book; slipcase good with some rubbing and wear. Inscribed in 1926 to Miss Wynne Byard on her wedding day by the author, "with the author's homage and memories of another September day passed at Hattonchatel three years ago." The author was a musicologist, father of Pete Seeger. Hattonchatel is a chateau in the Meuse region of France. The medieval castle was destroyed during World War I in 1918. The site was entirely reconstructed between 1923 and 1928 by Henri Jacquelin, a Norman architect originally from Evreux, in the Neo-Renaissance style. He produced the ultimate "troubadour" château of Lorraine, a pastiche which used some remains from the 11th century building. The work was financed by the American benefactor Belle Skinner (to whom this book is dedicated).
