Tall octavo, navy-blue hardcover, spine embossed with silver lettering, x, 284 pp., illustrated endpapers, eight double-sided colour plates, 16 double-sided black-and-white plates, several black-and-white maps and diagrams included, three appendices included. Spine ends and corners of covers bumped, otherwise a near-fine copy with a fine dust-jacket. First edition. An account of the establishment of the first Australian scientific research station in Antarctica. In 1947, physicist Phillip Law was appointed Senior Scientific Officer to the expedition that would carry out this mission. This group become known as Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE). Law was later appointed Director of the Antarctic Division. This volume is his very personal account of the experiences of the small group of determined men who made history in the Antarctic for Australia.
