Description:
Napoli: Giuseppe Coda, 1776. First Edition. Paper on card (semi-hardcover). Very Good. Scarce Neapolitan equestrian title, with only five libraries appearing to have it on OCLC FirstSearch. 8vo. 20 by 15 cm. xi, 194 pp. The book is a cross between a primer on horses and coaching and a celebration of the Neapolitan tradition in particular, with special homage to Cajetanus Pezzella, a then renowned horseman and equerry to the Prince of Francavilla. The book has an element also of the hoary Italianate "mirror" book, a self-help book for rulers to gentlemen instructing them on how to behave properly and excel in their role. Novi argues in essence that the dedication of a Pezzella is a sine qua non for mastery in horsemanship while lamenting that such an accomplishment may not be rewarded with heightened social status. Of perhaps greatest interest in the work is how Novi identifies a special "code of honor" amongst the cocchieri napolitani. No less a figure than Benedetto Croce has said that…

Description:
Paris: Éditions Albert Lévy. Librairie Centrale des Beaux-Arts, 1928. Nouvelle Edition. Paper pastedown on boards of folder. . Very Good. Folio. 48 by 37 cm. 20 plates of very bright pochoir of bold, visually exciting floral patterned decoration, the designs of which straddle what we regard as Art Nouveau and Art Deco. The Art Deco element enters into the geometric patterns, which are overall a recessive piece of the designs overall. Benedictus (1878-1930) was a polymath -- he was also a composer and a chemist. In the latter capacity, he invented bullet-proof glass. Condition: wear to the folio folder, with some discoloration and staining to its paper pastedown, and lifting of the spine. Fraying of spine cloth. Card stock used for title and plates somewhat brittle, with some edge chipping, and/or closed tears. most pronounced on title page. Plate 12 with a crease midway down the center of the horizontal, and there is a closed tear at the end of this. Some marginal soiling to the plate…

Description:
Paris. Box. Very Good Plus. A suite of 23 dazzling color plates of Japanese vases produced with a novel "pochoir"-like process around 1840. Each measures 46.5 by 35.5 cm, and in a small cursive handwritten note on the title page, the prints are described as "aquarelles miniatures", which happens to be the term Beauvalet used for his process. Beauvalet published a book in 1835 entitled "Aquarelle-Miniature Perfectionnee reflets metallique et chatoyans et peintre a l'huile sur velous en six leons," and in this book he speaks of a process of mixing watercolors which were to be successively applied to paper in a stencil process -- tantamount to what is now known as pochoir. Whether the procedure described accurately described fully what Beauvalet actually did so that the same effects could be replicated, it is indisputable that Beauvalet managed to achieve an uniquely lustrous effect, with colors and a sheen produced in this and the small body of other works credited to Beauvalet that were unlike…

Description:
St. Petersburg: The Department for the Production of State Documents [Expeditsii Zagotovleny Gosudarstvennukh], 1902. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good Minus. Hauntingly beautiful chromolithographic images by Ivan Biliban. 4to, measuring 32 by 26 cm, and 12 pp., featuring eight chromolithographs in addition to front cover and the rear cover vignette. Four of the chromos within are full page. In addition, there is the chromo decorative borders, very much a part of the integral whole. This work is part of a series of indigenous fairy tales the Russian government commissioned Bilibin to illustrate. To do so Bilibin paid meticulous care to actual traditional costume, architecture and decor. The work cemented Bilibin's renown, which was also built on stage design. Condition: cover with moderate soiling. Wrap spines with neat tearing running down most of way, but still holding together. Neat ink writing on top of margin.

Description:
Berlin: Hermann Hillger Verlag, 1915. First Edition. Paper pastedown on boards. Very Good. 8vo. Unpaginated, with 25 leaves, a color plate on each of them, not counting title leaf. The color plate is on the recto, and the facing verso contains accompanying verse. The artwork bears the style of a darkish late impressionism as it moved towards an Expressionist sensibility. As not everything was by the same hand, there is some diversity of style, coloring, literalism, of course. Included is an original subscription or order form for the book. It would appear that the book was sold in part or perhaps entirely through direct sales spearheaded by the Crown Princess and conducted by aristocratic women, at least in some measure. Light soiling to the cover pastedown. Scattered light soiling within. One gathering is partly loose.

Description:
Paris, 1931. Wraps. Very Good. Scarce relic of French movie fan magazine from the early Sound Pictures era, featuring stars of Hollywood. 4to. 32 by 24.5 cm. Unpaginated, 14 pages, plus wraps, with front cover having a oblong oval window cut-out showing Mary Brian and Richard Arlen embracing. Pages full of sepia toned photos, one to three per page, of Hollywood stars, with a major theme being the stars kissing -- an internal subtitle is "Baisers"! Stars are a mix of names still well-known and some more obscure other than to the most ardent cinema-phile. The better known stars include Joan Crawford, Gary Cooper, Marilyn Miller, Fay Wray, Lupe Velez, Joan Blondell, Norma Shearer, Robert Montgomery, Loretta Young, Costance Bennett and Ramon Novarro, and virtually all of these stars look more youthful than they are generally remembered. The magazine is evidence of the reach of the Hollywood publicity machine back when. Scarce -- we could locate no other copies on OCLC of this ephemeral item.…

Description:
Velvet, metal. Very Good. Very impressive blotter with a rich scarlet velvet fabric on the boards and decorated with brass mounts, both as a centerpiece and a border. Border mounts have three separate bands, the inner and outer bands are of a chain, and the center, more elaborate, band features interconnected urns -- on the vertical, interspersed with grotesque masks and pediments, on the horizontal, linked by swags of ribbon and fruits. All these devices are employed, in the centerpiece, with is topped by two flames. The actual center is a agglomeration of swirls and tassels. A small plaque near the base of this centerpiece bears the initials of MLF, obviously those of the initial owner, but whose identity is lost in the mists of time. Also within the perimeter bands, in each corner, are four hemispheric tacks. The endapers are of a silk damask decorated with stylized birds and lions. Their are four thick leaves between these. These papers have a pattern of squares within squares --…

New York: Rizzoli, 1990. First Edition Thus (In English). Cloth. New/New. Folio, 33 by 27 cm. 537 pp. Profusely and richly illustrated with spectacular photographs principally but also some images of prints, maps, etc. The survey captures the Venice of fantasy, taking us into interiors mostly inaccessible to the tourist. The book has previously been unused and is essentially new. It does have a short red magic marker line on lower edge right by spine tip -- the typical mark of a remainder book. In our view, the mark is inconspicuous and will not disconcert most collectors.

Paris: Imprimerie D'E. Duverger, 1850. Cloth Bound. Good. 4to. 47 plates (steel engravings mostly), with text interspersed. Probably was published as souvenir of the Palace and Trianons, with attractive pictures and concise historical and architectural explanations. Leather spine scuffed a bit, gilding fairly bright. Description:
Paris: Imprimerie Lemercier et Cie. Hautecoeur freres, Martinet. Cloth. Very Good. Oblong, 26 by 17 cm, 10 by 6.75 inches. With sixteen hand-colored views of the main palace, its grounds and fountains, and the Trianons. With no title other than that which is on the binding, this is a collection of views that were either assembled by the tourist and then bound, as was done then, or more likely, bound with some randomness by the souvenir shop. This can be inferred by the views bearing numbers but not having any particular order in this album. In any event, the pictures are delightful. Other than a very occasional fox mark in the margins, the plates are clean. The red cloth is faded, with soiling along the hinge and scattered elsewhere. Minor repairs to the hinge.
