Description:
Third corrected state of this finely engraved wall map. In 1745 the waterboard of Rijnland ordered the surveyor Melchior Bolstra to correct the outdated map of Dou and Broeckhuysen of 1647. The results of Bolstra's new survey were engraved into the original plates by David Coster. A map of the Haarlemmermeer with dotted lines to indicate its increasing size from 1531 untill 1740 and a plate with technical drawings of sluices and waterlevels were added. A very good copy of this beautiful map of the Rijnland district. Minor wormholes in margin, in one plate very slightly affecting plate image, one map slightly spotted in lower left corner.l Donkersloot-De Vrij 715

Description:
[32], 272 [= 268], 202, [2] pp.Robert Estiennes ground-breaking critical edition of the Greek New Testament, including variant readings from 15 manuscripts (plus the printed New Testament text of the 1514 Computensian Polyglot), mostly of the manuscripts from the French King François Is Bibliotheque Royale, but most importantly including for the first time the 5th-century manuscript later known as the Codex Bezae, then in a monastic library in Lyon. Each of these sources was designated by a Greek letter in Estiennes shoulder notes in the gutter mergin giving the variants. Estienne proved himself the consummate scholar-printer, strongly influenced by Erasmus, producing one of the greatest monuments of Renaissance erudition. This opened up opportunities for further research and for new interpretations of the New Testament text, opportunities often more appreciated by Protestants than by the conservative Catholics of the Council of Trent. The book frequently came under fire. The three sizes of…

Description:
A large wall map of the water district Woerden in the province of South Holland (on the border of the province of Utrecht), including the cities of Woerden, Oudewater and Montfoort, as well as many smaller towns (including Bodegraven) and the surrounding polders. Altogether it covers a region smaller than 20 by 20 kilometres at a scale of 1:17,000 (north above and to the right) and if assembled it would have a map image of 122 by 152 cm. It shows the fortifications and principal buildings of the three main cities, other forts and (outside the three main cities) every house, church and windmill. It gives the names of the individual polders (with their boundaries), the roads, waterways and dikes, and some wind mills and houses. The map was first engraved and printed in 1670 and 1671 by the Vingboons brothers, draftsmen, engravers and printers. The present is the sixth printing by Hendrik the Leth, who published the maps with and without the coats of arms, which were updated with most printings. The…

The work was published by Evert Maaskamp, who at the turn of the 19th century was the foremost publisher of luxurious Dutch view and costume books. One engraving shows the so-called "Czar Peter House" in Zaandam, where Peter the Great resided incognito in 1697 studying shipbuilding. Other plates show the village of Broek, some scenes at Zaandam, costumes of girls from Zaandam, Purmerend and Alkmaar, a family from Assendelft and two children at play. [4], IV, 127 pp.Very rare first and only edition of the only Dutch translation of a Russian description of the United States of America. The title-page notes that it is translated from the German translation (1816) and the preface notes that the first edition, in Russian, appeared in 1815. A second Russian edition appeared at St. Petersburg in 1818 and has sometimes been described as the first. The great Russian author Pavel Petrovic Svinyin or Svin'in, here westernized to "Paul Swinin", is best known for his Sketches of Russia, published in the West under the name "Suinine". The identity of the Dutch translator of the present work is unknown. It gives an interesting "picturesque" travel account of the United States spanning the year 1813 and provides five main accounts covering different subjects: a statistical survey; a religious overview with descriptions of the several Christian communities (naming Methodists, Quakers, Shakers, Baptists and more); a description of the different types of steamboats…

109; 89 ll.Rare and little known to scholarship: a medical work by one of the greatest physicians in Muslim history, copied quite early. Abu Bakr Al-Razi (ca. 864-925) is known by the name of Rhazes in the Latin tradition; few if any can claim his scope of influence on medical thought in the Christian and Muslim worlds alike. While the manuscript of al-Razis "Kitab al-Mansuri" ("The Book of Medicine for Al-Mansur") was translated into Latin by Gerard of Cremona around 1180 and disseminated to the West, the "Taqasim al-ilal", sometimes also known as "Taqsim wa al-Tashjir" ("Dividing and Diagramming"), remains almost unknown among al-Razis prolific productions, the present example being one of very few surviving manuscripts. A critical edition was not published until 1992, by the University of Aleppo.Rather than following the traditional method of treating body parts in order in an anatomical "head to toe" approach, the "Taqasim al-ilal" details a series of case studies of each ailment in 31…

[8], 95 pp.Medical ordinances and a list of the new taxes on nearly 2000 named medicinal components. As the Habsburgs in the 1770s attempted to strengthen their control over the professional standards and business activity of pharmacists and medical personnel in their realms, the authorities imposed new taxes on behalf of Empress Maria Theresa, covering all components of medicaments described and prescribed in the Pharmacopoea Austriaco-Provinciali the official book of pharmacological recipes for the entire Habsburg empire, with editions published almost every year from 1776 to ca. 1822. The ordinance on the subject was promulgated on 25 November 1775 and took affect on 1 January 1776, so the 1776 edition was clearly the first, but the 1790 edition calls itself the second. It is therefore not certain whether the present copy is the true second edition or a reissue of the first. Impressive plan of the excavation site of Tell Halaf (now on the Syrian-Turkish border), the location of the great ancient Aramaean town of Guzana, and one of the most important archaeological revelations of the modern era. Then in the Ottoman Empire, it was discovered in 1899 by the German diplomat Max von Oppenheim (1860-1946) while travelling through northern Mesopotamia on behalf of Deutsche Bank, working on establishing a route for the Bagdad Railway. This is a working copy of the official, authoritative plan of the site produced during the 1911-13 excavation led by Oppenheim, printed at Tell Halaf for the use of the senior archaeological team. It was almost certainly never intended for publication and if multiple copies were made, most were probably destroyed.Signed in the upper right-hand corner by Theodor Dombart (1884-1969), a professional architect and one of Oppenheims principal associates, later an esteemed professor of ancient Middle Eastern architecture and an authority on Munich…

XXVI, 381, [1]; VII, 352 pp.The Survey of Western Palestine began in January 1872 under the direction of Captain Stewart, who had to return home soon after due to illness. Lieutenant Claude Reignier Conder (1848-1910) took over and arrived in Palestine later that year. He returned to England in October 1875 after completing a survey of 4,700 square miles. The remaining 1,300 square miles were surveyed by Lieutenant Kitchener in 1877. This volume includes Lieutenant Conder's personal account of his work. Tent work in Palestine is Conders thrilling and deeply personal narration of his encounters during geological work in Palestine. Conder was part of the expedition to Egypt in 1882, under Sir Garnet Wolseley, to quell the rebellion of Arabi Pasha. He was appointed a deputy assistant adjutant and quartermaster-general on the intelligence department's staff, where his excellent knowledge of Arabic and Eastern people proved useful. [28], 91, [1] pp.Second(?) edition of a rare treatise on the use of bezoar stones (hardened accumulations of matter - often partly hair -¬ taken from the gut of a goat or other animal) as a universal antidote to poisons, by Angelo Sala (1576-1637), an Italian chemist and Paracelsist doctor, who seems to have belonged to the circle of Michael Maier in The Hague. The word bezoar derives from the Persian for antidote and Islamic medical treatises had discussed them since the 12th century. Around 1610 Sala became personal physician to a cousin of William of Orange, Count Johann Ludwig von Nassau, whom he followed in the Protestant camp in the Upper Palatinate. In 1612 he settled in The Hague, where he worked as a doctor and taught German, French, English and chemistry. Sala's experiments with silver salts, moreover, laid the foundations for the development of the photographic process. The present edition is the first book by Sala that Govert Basson in Leiden published. Description:
XLIX, [1], 522, 160 pp.Scarce work by William Fraser Hume (1867-1949), printed and published in Cairo, giving a detailed account of the origin and development of the earth and weighing various recent theories. The book begins with a broad perspective in chapters on the nature of the universe, the origin of the solar system, etc., and narrows down to the earth's internal structure and its pre-Cambrian state. The first half of the twentieth-century saw several revolutions in this field, and the present book gives special emphasis to these new developments, as well as to specific applications of these theories to the geology of Egypt. Discussed in detail are geological radioactivity, pioneered by George Darwin and John Joly in 1903, and Arthur Holmes's 1911 application of it to radiometric dating, finally debunking Lord Kelvin's famous 1862 dismissal of the idea that the earth might be more than a few tens of millions of years old (Lord Kelvin dated the earth based on thermodynamic principles, though one…

Description:
223, [2] ll.Very rare edition of Guevara's extremely popular and partly fictional biography of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (AD 121-180), which made the emperor a paragon of virtue and a popular subject in art and literature. Guevara claimed to have discovered an ancient manuscript containing twenty letters written by Marcus Aurelius, publishing them in the second half of his book, but in fact he invented them and used them as a didactic and literary device. This imaginative fictional basis for his biography no doubt resulted in a much more popular book than any true story could have, for it spoke to his contemporaries and provided a model for a wise ruler. With 2 owner's inscriptions on title-page. Some occasional browning and a small tear and hole in title-page, otherwise in very good condition.l STCN (1 copy); not in Bibl. Belg.; Simoni.
