Chatto & Wndus. 8vo., brown publisher's cloth lettered in gilt to spine; upper edge stained brown; complete in the striking original dust jacket designed by Paul Nash (7s. 6d. net); pp. [x], 3-278, [vi, ads.]; end papers very mildly offset; perhaps a little creased along spine, but otherwise a near fine example, the jacket a touch toned in places, with minor chipping to head/foot of spine and edges of folds; the illustrations retaining all of their brightness; a very fresh copy overall. First edition. Thirteen short stories based on his experiences in the war. Aldington was first sent to the front in December 1916, and during his time there wrote a number of essays and poems, though his experiences of gas in the trenches had a profound impact on both his life, and of course his writing. Alongside Images of War and Images of Desire, Roads to Glory was one of his first publications following his return home, and explores themes of fate, rivalry, and haunting regret. Description:
Hodder & Stoughton. First UK edition published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1920. This is a very good copy with the illusive dust wrapper. The wrapper has small slithers of loss to the top and bottom of the spine and to the corners. There are 2 small tears to the front panel. The spine has browned. The price on the spine is showing as 6'- net. The book in red boards has sunning to the spine ends and the corners are lightly rubbed. The first couple of pages have a patch of browning. There are no foxing marks though to the pages or text blocks and no previous owners ink. Overall a very good copy. The unusual and rarely found dust wrapper shows a map of Russia covered in darkness. H.G. Wells writes a series of essays about Russia after he visited there in 1914 and then again in 1920 and these were originally published in The Sunday Express as he was travelling through the country. He met with and had a long conversation with Lenin along with his friend Maxim Gorky. He describes both… Read More
