[Native American Art] Four Study Sketches in Pencil by Navajo Artist James Abeita Each sketch measures about 7.5 x 9 inches (they are each slightly different sizes) mounted to double mat boards, approximately 13 x 14 inches. Each has very light soiling. Verso is soiled to a larger extent including one sketch with a heavy splash of fluid and one with a greasy area. Neither area of soiling has bled to the artwork itself. See scans. Very Good Condition. Early study sketches from famed Navajo artist James Abeita. Abeita was born in Crownpoint, New Mexico in 1947. He is known especially for his portrait work of fellow Navajo Indians and for his realistic landscapes of the stark beauty of the American southwest. Abeita studied at the American Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago (1967) where he lived until 1971, moving back west to Crownpoint. While in Chicago, a friendship ensued with singer Johnny Cash, which led to Abeita receiving several commissions from Cash. After returning west, the artist worked… Read More

Description:
1948. Archive of Educator and Historian Arthur L. Johnson, circa 1943-1948 About 8 inches of manuscript material in Good to Very Good condition with some light to moderate edge wear and a bit of dust-soiling. A fantastic and well-rounded collection of drafts, notes and manuscripts of a noted New Jersey educator and historian, Arthur L. Johnson. Some of the materials relate to the history of education in the New Jersey area, and others attempt to bring light to the medical and medicinal practices of Native Americans. There is also content on the fascinating history of the murder of a passionately pro-American chaplain's wife during the Revolutionary War. Arthur L. Johnson served as the superintendent of schools for Union County, New Jersey for 45 years. He founded the Union County Junior College, and helped organize the Union County Band and Orchestra Summer School, as well as the Eastern Conservatory of Music and Arts. Johnson also helped establish the county's regional high school system. In… Read More

Navajo Sandpainting Photograph from 1920's Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial Celebration Dry-mounted photo measures 11.25 x 20 inches. Upper left corner is bumped. "Mullarky Photo Gallup, N.Mex" in manuscript lower left corner. Modern print likely from the 1980's. Very Good Condition. Thomas "Tom" Mullarky (1897-1959) moved to Gallup with his bride likely in 1927, from the southern California desert where he apprenticed under photographer Leo Hetzel. Mullarky specialized in converting his photos into RPPC'S and catered to tourists who needed camera and film supplies. Mullarky was the foremost documentarian of the growing Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial celebrations, held each summer. The first gathering was in 1922. Thomas Mullarky died in 1959. In 1960 Nello and Shan Guadagnoli purchased Mullarky's Camera Shop, along with all the contents of the building, located on Route 66. Nello Guadagnoli was also a photographer but soon began selling artwork by Native American artists, opening the Kiva Gallery… Read More

Description:
1983. Bradbury, Ray Near Fine Signed Copy of "October" by Ray Bradbury, 1983 A beautifully illustrated booklet, stapled bright orange pictorial wraps, [12] pp., like new. Signed on the cover by the author. First printing of a long, early, SPOOKY Bradbury poem completed in 1940. An introduction by Walt Daugherty of Los Angeles related that "oh so many years ago, a very young Ray Bradbury" dropped by his home and they recorded the poem on "one of the old recorders that reproduced on a wax covered paper record." It was included in a "multiple record program called Shangri La Record, which was sent to several science fiction clubs active at the time" and then languished in the Ackerman archives until Walt re-found it, and his wife Mary Ellen expertly preserved and replayed it. Bradbury himself wrote the preface to this special printing, reportedly limited to 150 copies, asking readers to "treat that young man with patience and some loving care, for he hardly knew what he was doing . . . Recorder's office stamp filled in manuscript on verso. Light soiling and foxing. Small piece missing from top edge. Good Condition. [New Mexico][Native Americana] Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial Photography Collection--1968 Collection consists of 180 photographs in glassine sleeves, each with negative. Photographs measures 3 x 2.5 inches and are in fine condition. Several sleeves have small tears. Interesting and comprehensive collection of photos from the 1968 Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial. First launched in 1922, the Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial has been taking place in Gallup, New Mexico, for over 100 years. The Ceremonial is not only one New Mexico's oldest events, but also one of longest running celebrations of Native American culture and art. Early Ceremonials featured Native Americans primarily from the nearby Navajo Nation and Pueblo of Zuni, but soon attracted tribal members from throughout the west. Events include parades, sporting events and cultural and art exhibitions. We are unsure of who the photographer was for this set but surmise it was Nello Guadagnoli. Description:
Newport Jazz Festival Photo Archive 1966 & 1967--1260 Photos, Newport, Rhode Island Newport Jazz Festival is an annual multi-day jazz music festival held in Newport, Rhode Island, beginning with the first festival in 1954. Throughout the years, Newport hosted many great jazz musicians, some returning year after year. Collection includes 1260 Photos (35mm negatives) and features mostly "concert" images although there are some backstage scenes, informal posed shots and views of the audience. Concert images capture the intensity and joy of these monsters of jazz. While we have not identified the photographer(s), they clearly were good and had access to the stage and the musicians at various venues. Many close-up photographs show the intensity and concentration of the musicians with their bandmates. You can almost feel the music through imagery. The line-up for 1966 included: Dave Brubeck, Paul Desmond, Jimmy Smith Trio, Archie Shepp Quartet, John Coltrane, Charlie Byrd, Nina Simone, Stan Getz,… Read More

Striking issue of the Oakland Owl Newspaper, Oakland, Oregon printed on red silk, dated June 16, 1906. Curious presentation of a small-town weekly newspaper printed on expensive silk. Front page only, which provides no clues as to why the paper would have been printed on silk. Perhaps this was printed as a retirement gift or ceremonial issue--further research required. Only Oregon State and University of Oregon hold paper copies of the Oakland Owl; no silk copies found in commerce or OCLC. Rare. Page contains local and regional news including a note that A.O. Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) was a renowned American painter and illustrator, producing over 4,000 original works, which still have much popular appeal due to their depiction of United States culture and everyday life. Rockwell created many cover illustrations for the Saturday Evening Post, illustrated more than 40 books, and painted portraits of several presidents and foreign dignitaries. Some of his most well-known paintings include Rosie the Riveter, the Willie Gillis series, The Problem We All Live With, and the Four Freedoms series.
