Description:
Very Good. Single sheet 17 x 18 cm. which was recently framed under glass (32 x 30 cm. as framed) Old and very visible tape mark on both sides of an old vertical fold on the document. An old dampstain covers most of the document but does not affect readability. Document dated Nov. 27, 1847. No location given in document. Handwritten note on the brown paper on the back of the framed item: "Owned by Anna Galbraith Smith's grandmother Vilatta Hagler, in Carthage, Tennessee. He was freed at 18 years of age per family history." If the dating of Henry's freedom is correct, that would have been about a year after General George Crook established a Union outpost in Carthage during the Civil War while trying to root out pockets of resistance in Eastern and Middle Tennessee and a couple years before Lee surrendered at Appomattox.
