Two vols. 8vo (273 x 178 mm.), somewhat later wrappers, later block-printed title labels on upper covers, new stitching. [Korea]: colophon dated 1562 (Jiajing 41). An early and very rare (no copy in WorldCat) Korean edition of the teachings of the Cheng 程 brothers, Hao 顥 (1032-85) and Yi 頤 (1033-1107), two important philosophers of the Northern Song period; they can be called the true founders of Neo-Confucianism. The Cheng brothers, along with their uncle Zhang Zai, their teacher Zhou Dunyi, and their friend Shao Yong, were the most important thinkers of the Northern Song. "Cheng Yi claimed that he and his brother recovered the Learning of the Way, which had been lost since the time of Mencius in the fourth century B.C. With Cheng Hao's encouragement, the Mencius quickly became integrated into the intellectual and philosophical mainstream... "Cheng Yi's theory of…

Several hundred fine double-page woodcuts throughout. Three series, each in 12 vols. 36 vols. 8vo, orig. deeply embossed stiff wrappers, each series in a different color, block-printed title labels on upper covers (some labels worn), new stitching. Series I & II: Kyoto: Fushimiya Hanzaburo; Osaka: Kawachiya Mohei et al., 1807 & 1813; Series III: Kyoto, Osaka, & Owari Province (in today's Aichi Prefecture): various publishers, 1825. First editions and a complete set with all three series; very rare when complete. The five battles of Kawanakajima were fought between Takeda Shingen of Kai Province and Uesugi Kenshin of Echigo Province in the years 1553, 1555, 1557, 1561, and 1564. The battles have been repeatedly celebrated in warrior novels of the Edo period. These novels can be categorized as gokan, popular illustrated stories. Hayami Shungyosai (d. 1823), was a well-known Osaka and Kyoto artist and yomihon author. Brown considered him to be "a man of really great ability" (Block Printing & Book…

Description:
39 leaves. Two parts in one vol. 8vo, orig. patterned semi-stiff wrappers (wrappers a little wormed), new stitching. Osaka: Kashiwabaraya Seiemon, 1764. First edition. Sekkōsai was an artist active in Osaka, ca. 1740-50. He illustrated books and theater programs and also designed a number of prints. This is "the best of Sekkōsai's sumi-printed books, consisting of a wide range of miscellaneous pictures, some in Kanō or even Itchō style. The profile drawing of a girl wearing a kimono patterned with white hares and drooping willow wands is unusually winning."-Hillier, The Art of the Japanese Book, p. 299. A fresh copy, with some worming, occasionally repaired, touching images. We do not find it offensive. References Brown, Louise Norton. Block Printing & Book Illustrations in Japan. London: 1924, p. 64.

Tall narrow 8vo, orig. semi-stiff dark blue boards (minor rubbing), orig. block-printed mica-dusted title labels on upper covers, each entitled "Shinpan Myohorengekyo" ["new [carved] boards for the Myohorengekyo"] & volume number. [Japan]: early to mid-Edo? A very rare - apparently unrecorded - edition of the complete Lotus Sutra, handsomely carved throughout in hiragana, allowing those unskilled in reading kanji to study the text. The vast majority of sutra printed in early Japan were carved in kanji (kanbun style) or a mixture of kanji and hiragana. NIJL lists only two editions of the Lotus Sutra printed entirely in hiragana: a 1682 edition, which is clearly not our edition, and another, undated, edition held by the Sakamoto Ryumon Bunko of Nara. Sadly, their copy is not digitized, and we are unable to compare it with our example. In our copy, only…

32 fine full-page woodcuts. 42 folding leaves. Large 8vo, orig. blue wrappers (wrappers rather rubbed, minor soiling), modern manuscript label on upper cover, new stitching. [Japan]: from the Japanese colophon on the penultimate leaf: "Nakano Zesui had the woodblocks carved & published this book mid-July 1655." First edition to be published in Japan, printed in Chinese with Japanese reading marks. Yongming Yanshou (J.: Eimei (or Yomei) Enju, 904-75), was a Chan master who had a profound impact on the development of Buddhism in East Asia. Yanshou was a widely influential proponent of a scripture-based Chan, in opposition to the rhetorical and iconoclastic Chan of the Linji school. He became the first master to teach both Meditation and Pure Land Buddhism, a synthesis that dominated Chinese Buddhism after the Song dynasty. This finely illustrated biography of Yanshou was written by the late Ming monk Dahe. It contains the later notes contributed by Yu Chunxi (jinshi 1583) and Huang Ruheng…

Many illus. Unpaginated. 8vo, stiff pictorial boards, cloth spine. [Mexico City]: Alias, 2013.

First edition, an uncommon book examining Carrión's De Diefstal van het Jaar "exhibition" at the Drents Museum in 1982. This show entailed Ulises Carrion (1941-89) displaying a large diamond in a small and dark room of the museum, without any visible security or restrictions, as a social experiment. In the last decade of his life, Carrión's practice involved similar investigations of societal norms and the dissemination of information. The previous year, the artist had delved into the spread of gossip and rumors through social networks in the performance piece Gossip, Scandal and Good Manners, in which he concocted rumors about himself to observe how they spread.

Pairing new essays (presented in Spanish & English) by Martha Hellion and Paulo Silveira with Claudio Goulart's original photography documenting…

Description:
Title within woodcut border & woodcut on verso of final leaf. 54, [2] pp. Small 4to, modern binding reusing an early MS. leaf over boards (verso of final leaf a little soiled). [Basel: J. Froben, 1518]. First separate edition of these two famous texts, "In Praise of Marriage" and "In Praise of Medicine." The first work created a cause célèbre; written many years earlier in honor of the marriage of his friend Lord Mountjoy, when finally published it was seen by the Louvain and Paris theologians as an implicit condemnation of clerical celibacy. The second work is Erasmus's expression of his views of the medical arts. It "presents a view of medical ethics that identifies competence, beneficence and diligence as the physician's primary moral obligations. The activity of the physician, when directed toward the patient in accordance with these obligations, gives rise to reciprocal obligations on the part of the patient: gratitude and reward.…
