Description:
London: Chatto & Windus, 1928. First Edition. . Hardback. Very Good/Good Plus. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 19.5 × 13cm, 264pp. The author's last collection of stories, published just after his death. From the wrapper "These stories will bring to all a grievously sharp sense of the loss English letters have suffered in the death of their author. They are stories of heroic people, of quiet heroes and simple heroes, the sort of people who see things through and do not make a fuss about it, the people Montague knew and respected better perhaps than any author now writing. The first story, Action, a mountaineering story, is an epitome of the book and appropriately gives it its title. But they are not all stories of one scene. There are tales of rowing on the Thames, of the War, of tramps and of London life. In all there is Montague's vivid command of word, his humour, his wit, and his courage." Condition: Very good condition. The wrapper is a little tanned to the edges and…

Description:
Stroud: Alan Sutton, 1999. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. First edition. Paperback. 24.5 × 17cm, 116pp. This copy from the library of Anne Powell, historian, anthologist and author on the First and Second World Wars, and signed to her by the compiler Anne Harvey. Loosely pasted in is a copy of a review from Vernon Scannell. Edward Thomas never left the train that stopped briefly at a Cotswold station, Adlestrop, just before World War I, but what he saw resulted in one of the best known and loved English poems, Adlestrop. Generations of literary pilgrims have visited the village which inspired the poem, while many of today's writers have composed their own tributes to the poet and the place where, after the closure of the station, the nameboard was lovingly retained. This anthology explores Adlestrop's literary, topographical and railway associations. Anne Harvey investigates the origins of the poem: did the train really stop 'unwontedly'? Was it an express? Was Thomas travelling alone? His…

The book is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait, map endpapers and six pages of photographs. Brian Arthur Lewis Stuart (1902-1981) went on to become a successful thriller writer, publishing…

Description:
London: Lawrence & Wishart, 1973. Reprint. . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Reprint. Hardback in dustwrapper. 22 × 14cm, 374pp. Aeschylus and Athens is far more than a study of the plays of Aeschylus and what they meant to the audience for whom they were written. It is a profound inquiry into the origins and development of Athenian democracy, and as such an inquiry into the roots of western civilisation and culture. For Professor Thomson's contention is that the plays of Aeschylus contain fundamental problems which could never be solved within the accepted limits of either conventional literary criticism or conventional classical scholarship. The Aeschylean drama is so inseparable from the social and political life of Athens that it can only be understood by studying it methodically in its full historical context. Therefore, while the primary object of this book is a better understanding of Aeschylus, it covers a much wider field, including the history of early Greek poetry, the growth of the…

London: Lawrence & Wishart, 1960. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good Plus/Good Plus. First edition. Hardback in dustwrapper. 20 × 13.5cm, 285pp. Signed and dated by Jack Woddis to the ffep. From the dustwrapper, "Jack Woddis has spent a number of years studying African developments, and has had the opportunity of close contact with many of Africa's political and trade union leaders. The present volume deals with the social and economic causes of the 'wind of change' which is now sweeping the African continent. In a detailed and objective examination of the impact of colonialism on the African peoples, the author finds the basis of the contemporary revolt against white domination in the conditions of land tenure and labour which were imposed by the Colonial Powers." The author was a lifelong Communist, and member of the Movement for Colonial Freedom. Condition: This copy is in very good condition for age. The wrapper's spine is a bit tanned and pages 281-284 of the index are neatly detached.

London: Allan Lane, 2019. 1st Edition 3rd Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First edition, third printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 22.5 × 14cm, 392pp. Signed directly to the title page by Johny Pitts, "To our grandchildren, Johny Pitts, FOR POSTERITY". Afropean is an on-the-ground documentary of areas where Europeans of African descent are juggling their multiple allegiances and forging new identities. Here is an alternative map of the continent, taking the reader to places like Cova Da Moura, the Cape Verdean shantytown on the outskirts of Lisbon with its own underground economy, and Rinkeby, the area of Stockholm that is eighty per cent Muslim. Johny Pitts visits the former Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow, where West African students are still making the most of Cold War ties with the USSR, and Clichy Sous Bois in Paris, which gave birth to the 2005 riots, all the while presenting Afropeans as lead actors in their own story. Description:
London: Lawrence & Wishart, 2008. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Good Plus. First edition. Paperback. 21.5 × 14cm, 288pp. Signed and dedicated by Beatrix Campbell to the title page. Published ten years after the Good Friday Agreement, this book is about the people, ideas and movements that created it. But it is also about its limits; how the Agreement's promise was frequently betrayed by an establishment that found it difficult to give up its dominance. Campbell documents the forces strongly resisting change, including those inside the police, military and secret services whose refusal to repudiate their long history of collusion prevented them from contributing to peace-making. Gender is woven into the texture of this story - from the men who sought to dominate the streets to the women who fought for the equality agenda. Condition: A good solid copy, with some light creasing to the spine and a little wear to the covers.

New York: The Museum of Modern Art, 1998. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First edition. Hardback in dustwrapper. 27.5 × 26cm, 319pp. Of the indisputably great figures in 20th-century architecture, Alvar Aalto is in many ways the most humane, the least rigid, the most relevant to our contemporary sensibility and the emerging future. This sumptuous book offers a thorough study of an innovative and prolific master, whom Frank Lloyd Wright termed a genius. This fresh, penetrating examination of Aalto's work and influence includes essays by five notable critics and historians. Some 50 of Aalto's projects - houses, town halls, cultural institutions, factories, furniture and glass designs, and regional plans - from all periods of his extraordinarily productive career are illustrated and described, using much previously unpublished and newly photographic material. This book was published to accompany a 1998 retrospective exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Condition: This copy…

London: Royal Academy of Arts, 1999. First Edition. . Paperback. Good. First edition. Paperback. 25.5 × 19cm, 375pp. Amazons of the Avant-Garde features the pioneering Modernism of six artists - Alexandra Exter, Natalia Goncharova, Liubov Popova, Olga Rozanova, Varvara Stepanova, and Nadezhda Udaltsova - all of whom shared an ambition to discover what Rozanova described as "new bases of artistic creation." This illustrated book accompanied the Royal Academy exhibition and explores the vital role that each artist played in the formation of a radical cultural enterprise - the art of the Russian avant-garde - through an examination of their original and independent approaches to art making. In doing so, the exhibition traces the evolution of modern Russian painting from Neo-Primitivism, Cubo-Futurism, and Rayism to Suprematism and Constructivism.
