[For The Hospital]. N.p. [1952]. 8vo.. pp. 12. Stapled as issued in paper wrappers, a very good copy. *Christ's Hospital (CH) is one of the famous Royal Hospitals of London, whose foundation marked the beginning of the social services in Tudor England. Inspired by a sermon by Nicholas Ridley, Bishop of London, the young King Edward VI instructed the Lord Mayor, Sir Richard Dobbs, to appoint a committee of leading citizens to consider remedies and relief for the City's homeless poor. Their work, and subsequently their philanthropy, led to the founding of the five great Hospitals all supporting different needs. CH, established in the monastery of the Grey Friars in Newgate Street, embraced the task of educating and nourishing the destitute children of the City and took children of all social backgrounds and ages. In November 1552, CH opened its doors to 380 pupils and, within a year, the number had increased to over 500. Christ's Hospital's name derives from being founded in the parish of…

Two photographs : a studio portrait and a carte-de-visite. CABINET PORTRAIT : Image size - c.14.5 x 10 cms. It has been trimmed top and bottom thus losing a sliver of the photograph at the top [not affecting the image] and most of the photographer's imprint at the bottom. Enough remains of the latter to enable the identification of either JOHN or FRANK PELHAM MOFFAT, 125 Princes Street, Edinburgh, who were working there from 1873-1926 [John] and 1875-1888 & 1895-1912 [Frank]. It is a fine image in excellent condition. CARTE-DE-VISITE : Image size - c.7.5 x 5.5 cms. The photographer is P[ETER]. DEVINE, 101b Princes Street, Edinburgh, working there 1861-1877. Devine's imprint is on the reverse of the carte; there is also an early signature, 'D. Waldie', probably Waldie's own, plus a brief biographical note by ISABEL ROSS. Waldie is shown holding an open book, sadly unidentifiable. The photograph is slightly faded but otherwise in excellent condition.

. TOGETHER WITH : WALDIE, David. Journal of a Voyage from England to Calcutta by the Overland Route. Edited with notes by ALAN G. YOUNG. Linlithgow Heritage Trust. 2013. pp. vi, 196. 18 full page coloured illustrations and a few text figures. Pictorial paper wrappers, very good copy. *DAVID WALDIE, 1813-1889, born in Linlithgow, died in Kolkata [Calcutta]. He studied medicine at Edinburgh, qualifying in 1831 when he returned to Linlithgow, practising as surgeon and apothecary. In 1839 or 1840 he gave up medicine and moved to Liverpool, where he took the post of Chemist to the Apothecaries' Company of Liverpool. Waldie came across chloroform in its then known form, 'chloric ether', first introduced into Britain, in Liverpool, from America in 1838-39. The make-up of the ether appeared to Waldie to be inconsistent and he therefore developed the process of purifying and standardising chloroform. He was thus familiar and knowledgeable about its properties and on a return to Scotland, and in a meeting…

Description:
. *Thomas Sims (floruit 1860s) had married Frances, Wallace's sister, in c.1851. He had been an early experimenter with the daguerreotype process and in 1847 began working with Fox Talbot's calotype technique. In 1852 he exhibited examples of his work at the first British photographic exhibition organised by the Society of Arts in London. He and Fanny shared a house at 44, Upper Albany Street, Regents Park, with Wallace, and established a photographic studio there c. 1852. Shortly afterwards he became involved in a legal dispute with Talbot. Refusing to pay Talbot for a license, an injunction was served forcing him to close his studios [see British Journal of Photography, June 13, 1930, pp. 353-355 - also Lacock Collection MS LA56.33]. After the Talbot v. Laroche case in 1854, against Talbot, Sims re-opened his studio in Regents Park, and in 1862 [see WALLACE My Life, v.I, p.385], moved it to Westbourne Grove, remaining in business in London until 1868. He then moved to Tunbridge Wells where he…
