Description:
[4], 3, [1 blank] pp.First and only edition of one of the rarest books on Japanese flora. The author Engelbert Kaempfer (1651 - 1716) was a professor from Lemgo, Germany, who joined the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a medical doctor in 1685. After periods in what are now India and Indonesia he travelled in 1690 to Japan to work as a doctor on Dejima (Deshima), the Dutch trading post or factory in Nagasaki. Sir Hans Sloan acquired his manuscripts, alsong with his drawings and herbarium, and arranged for their translation and publication, the first to appear in translation was The history of Japan in 1727. This English translation established Kaempfer's reputation as the 18th-century authority on Japan and deeply influenced Japan's image in Europe. The renowned botanist and companion of the 1768 Cook expedition Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820) was responsible for the editing and publication of the present work and dedicated it to the curators of the Library. In most cases no plates had previously been…

Description:
[2], XII, 414; IV, 423, [8].Second English edition. Kalm's account met with great success and is a classic in North American travel literature. A Swedish botanist, Kalm travelled in America from 1748 to 1751. His primary purpose was to discover plants that could thrive in Sweden, but his observations range much wider. He discusses the American Indians, the value of colonies and numerous other subjects. His work contains a truthful account of the countries visited. Linnaeus, who instigated Kalm's voyage, immortalized the him by naming the America Laurel "Kalmia" in his honour. J.R. Forster, a German naturalist who accompanied Captain Cook, translated Kalm's account into English.Kalm's observations have little scientific value, but they possess a certain freshness that commends them to every lover of the wayside.
His observations give us a glimpse of historical background -- a bit of real bird life in America more than half a century before the father of American Ornithology began his work…

Description:
[4], 282; [4], 274, [6] pp.First French translation of one of the most popular 18th-century books on the Pacific, and the main source of early knowledge of the Pelew or Palau Islands in Micronesia. In 1773, the Antelope under command of Captain Henry Wilson was shipwrecked near one of the Palau Islands, a previously unexplored group. The crew managed to reach shore, where they were well treated by the natives. They built a small boat from the wreck, in which they reached Macao. They took Lee Boo, the son of Abba Thulle, King of the Palau Islands, with them to England where he made a very good impression. Unfortunately, he soon died of smallpox. George Keate (1729-1797), a friend of Captain Wilson and of Voltaire, composed the relation from the journals and oral communications of the Captain and some of his officers. Keate also published books on poetry and history. With manuscript owner's inscription on title-page. Binding worn along the extremities. Some faint browning along the extremities and a…

Description:
[8], 207, [1 blank] pp.First and only edition of Kersteman's extremely rare "histoire scandaleuse", describing the flagrant life of Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764), mistress of Louis XV. The book is described on the title-page and in the preface as a defence against the slanderous biographies published by the French and English. This apparently couldn't convince the French ambassador Louis Augustin d'Affry, who had, immediately after publication, destroyed the full run after buying all available copies for their full price, to defend Madame de Pompadour her good name. With modern bookplate on pastedown. The engraved frontispiece is possibly transferred from another work and has a small restored tear in the margins. Faint dampstain in the last quire and a few spots throughout. Good untrimmed copy. The original wrappers soiled, but the vellum very good.l Buisman 1029; STCN (2 copies); Ter Horst no. X; Waller 745.

This important Sunni text was first translated into English by Capt. Matthews of the Bengal Artillery. Although some of the original hadith are not included and others incorrectly translated, this attempt to publish a translation from the Arabic was a noted accomplishment for its time. The list of subscribers accounts for 122 copies, with an additional 100 copies noted as being published on order of the Governor General in Council for the Honourable Company. A statement in a 1848 issue of the Journal of Sacred Literature suggests that most copies of the work were destroyed at sea, yet it was still advertised for sale in 1817 in the Literary panorama (at the price of…

[8], 190, [2 blank] pp.Rare first Dutch edition of a detailed account of the Greek islands (the first edition to include the sea chart), by the great Dutch-German Admiral and naval strategist Kinsbergen, known as the Hero of the Black Sea for his successes in battles against the Turks in the 1770s. He gives a detailed description of the region, island by island, with the emphasis on navigation along the coasts, but also with information on fortifications. The book is explicitly directed to military men, seamen and merchants active in the area, and expresses the hope that political changes may in the future lift these islands out of their present state. The map of Greece and the surrounding seas is in Mercator projection at a scale of about 1:1,400,000, with rhumb lines (with a fleur-de-lis indicating north toward the head), parallels and meridians, and reticulated scales of latitude in the left and right border. [32], 618, [28] pp.The third, last, best and only folio edition, much enlarged, thoroughly revised and with the engraved and many other illustrations newly made for it, of one of the major scientific works of the famous German Jesuit scholar, Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680), a truly encyclopedic work on magnetism. Kircher published his first major work, Ars Magnetica, in 1631. Only 63 pages in length, it extensively reports on his invention of a method for measuring magnetic power by means of a balance. The present work on magnetism was for Kircher an omnibus of scientific and also phantastic theories. He researched and measured magnetism in numerous situations and applied it to numerous fields of study, including cosmology, astronomy, geography, optics, electricity, medicine, metallurgy, animals, music, love, etc. He was the first to propose using magnetic declination to determine longitude. With the armorial bookplate of Hyacinth Theodore Baron (1706/07-1787), Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Paris,…

[18], 482, [10] pp. (including 2 integral frontispieces), plus 4 inserted tables & 2 plates.First edition of a seventeenth-century attempt to organise all knowledge of the universe into a classified system with nine primary categories (represented by icons made for the present edition) and to discover an underlying universal language, the most ambitious work (and one of the most extensive) of the great eccentric Jesuit genius Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680): a bizarre mixture of philosophy, science, religion and fantasy. On 29 July 1661 Kircher contracted to have the Amsterdam bookseller Johannes Janssonius van Waesberge (1616/17-1681) publish his books including new editions of some previously published works as well as works he had not yet written. 6 pp. plus plates.Fifth edition, printed from the plates of the 1771 first edition, of an extremely rare and richly decorative weaver's sample book containing about 300 models for weaving cloth in all sorts of patterns (some wholly abstract, some with acorns, flowers, trees, etc.) and colours. The title-page indicates that it intended for master and journeyman weavers, as well as amateurs. Kirchenbaum (1725-1782) was a master weaver in Heilbronn. Some of the patterns create odd visual affects reminiscent of 1960s op-art. Others resemble patchwork quilt patterns. Since all follow the grid of the warp and woof they foreshadow today's digital art based on a grid of pixels. All editions are extremely rare. We have located only one other copy of the present edition, at the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam. The letterpress text provides explanations plate by plate and also includes the text of Kirchbaum's preface to the first edition of 1771 and the publisher's new preface for the…

[24], 203, [5] pp.Second and last issue of the rare first and only edition of a heraldic game for young noblemen to learn the heraldry, genealogy, geography and history of the main European kingdoms, duchies, counties, electorates and other states. This was considered very important, since many of these young men were to one day take part in political and governmental activities. The game is to be played with a pack of ordinary playing cards and a map of the world spread over the playing table. Each player takes a turn by randomly drawing a card and describing the genealogy, heraldry, geography and history of the region that the book associates with that card. One of the players serves as arbiter and when a player fails to give a correct and sufficient description, he must pay a fine. The book itself provides the information for describing the heraldry, genealogy, geography and history of the regions it associates with the cards. VIII, 36; [4], 70, [2 blank]; [4], 87, [1 blank], [4], [2 blank] pp.Complete third Dutch edition, with the illustrations printed from the original plates, of three classic works of pomology (two illustrated), originally published in 1758 and 1763 as Pomologia, Fructologia and Dendrologia. The twenty plates illustrating ninety apples and pears were drawn by the author and engraved by Jan Caspar Philips (ca. 1700-1775) and Jacob Folkema (1692-1767). Those of branches of fruit and nut trees were no doubt drawn by the author as well but are unsigned. Knoop (1700-1769) was gardener to Princess Anne (mother of Willem V, Prince of Orange, and his regent from 1751 to her death in 1759) at her Marienburg estate near Leeuwarden. In this edition, the plates are printed on the outer part of whole sheets bound as folding leaves. This makes it easy to look at the plates while reading the text. With the manuscript owner's inscription of "J.C.J. Copijn" in black ink on…

Description:
[20], 529; [6], 449, [87] pp.Best (and first Dutch) edition of the most important account of the Cape of Good Hope and one of the most important works of all time on South Africa, with twice as many copperplates as the first German edition. Much of the material is based on Kolbe's own observations in the years 1705 to 1713, but he also compares them with the observations and theories of earlier writers. The zoological plates show numerous mammals, birds, fish and other marine animals and reptiles, and other plates cover topography, agriculture, hunting, buildings, etc. In addition to these subjects, the text provides detailed information on the customs and habits of the Hottentots, a well-documented account of the VOC government of the Cape, the earliest list of South African animals and much information about plants. It remains an essential primary source for any study of South Africa. Some minor thumbing and foxing in the margins of the textleaves, some of the folds of the plates reinforced and a…
