Description:
New York: the artist, 1966-1971 [Melbourne: the artist, 2008]. Folio, commercial binder folder, thirteen leaves offset printed of geometric statements which articulate the design of an object. Produced in a small unspecified edition. An experimental piece where the artist mathematically describes a physical object. An unfinished work 1966 - 1971 was originally exhibited at the Whitney Museum Artists Resource Centre, New York, and A Space Gallery, Toronto, as part of an installation. It was intended as an edition of 100 copies, although far fewer were produced, they were given away to visitors to allow them to own a piece of the installation, if they so chose. This is one of five copies Jacks made in 2008 recreating the original in a very low edition. References: ANDERSON, Peter. The artist’s books of Robert Jacks. Bendigo : Bendigo Art Gallery, 2009, p. 25 SELENITSCH, Alex. Australian artists books. Canberra : National Gallery of Australia, 2008, no. 11 Collections: National…

Description:
Melbourne : National Gallery of Victoria 2018. Two volumes in plastic slipcase, quarto, each with diecut wrappers, the first volume being a 144 page monograph on the seminal exhibition of Australian modernism held in 1968, the second volume being a 96 page facsimile of the rare original 1968 catalogue. Fine condition. 'The National Gallery of Victoria’s inaugural exhibition at its new premises on St Kilda Road in 1968 was The Field, the first comprehensive display of colour field painting and abstract sculpture in Australia. Regarded as a landmark exhibition in Australian art history, The Field was a radical presentation of 74 works by 40 artists who practised hard-edge, geometric, colour and flat abstraction, many of which were influenced by American stylistic tendencies of the time. With its silver foil–covered walls and geometric light fittings, The Field opened to much controversy and helped launch the careers of a generation of Australian artists, including Sydney Ball, Peter Booth, Janet…

Moleskine notebook, bound in leather, 21 x 13 cm, inscribed on the first leaf 'Jacks / 2005 / Colour', containing colour samples pasted on to the grid lined sheets, a couple of pages excised, about half the pages are blank. A colour source book for Robert Jacks. In 2014 Robert Jacks's body of work was featured in a retrospective exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. 'This exhibition represents the first large-scale retrospective of Robert Jacks who is one of Australia’s most significant and accomplished abstract artists. From his first sell-out solo exhibition at Gallery A in Melbourne in 1966, through to his ongoing exploration of abstraction in painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking, his work has charted a distinctive and influential path through late twentieth and early twenty-first century Australian art. Born in 1943 Jacks studied sculpture at Prahran Technical College from 1958–1960 and painting at RMIT in 1961–62. His first solo exhibition was held to great acclaim…

A suite of etchings by Robert Jacks. Melbourne: Port Jackson Press Australia, 2004. Folio, gilt-embossed green oxford buckram clamshell box measuring 395 x 290mm containing title sheet and nine original etchings each 380 x 280mm, each signed and titled by the artist. Edition limited to thirty copies. ‘Ulysses by James Joyce has been the source of inspiration and titles for paintings, by Robert Jacks, since 1965. It’s been a long romance. Hence, when he was invited to create a suite of prints to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Ulysses, it was as if Jacks had received a personal handwritten invitation from the Misses Morkan, for their annual Christmas dinner at what is now the leading literary address in the world, 15 Usher’s Island’ - Jeff Makin, from the title sheet to the folio. The year of 2004 saw the centenary celebration of Bloomsday, the twenty four hours of the 16th June 1904, during which the events of Joyce’s masterwork Ulysses were staged. Robert Jacks was invited to…
