Description:
Thomas Chandler Haliburton (December 17, 1796 - August 27, 1865) was a politician, judge, and author in the British Colony of Nova Scotia. He was the first international best-selling author from what is now Canada and played a significant role in the history of Nova Scotia prior to its entry into Confederation.Haliburton was born in Windsor, Nova Scotia, the son of William Hersey Otis Haliburton, a lawyer, judge and political figure, and Lucy Chandler Grant. His mother died when he was a small child, and his father remarried when he was seven, giving him as stepmother Susanna Davis, the daughter of Michael Francklin, who had been Nova Scotia's Lieutenant Governor.[1] He attended University of King's College in Windsor and became a lawyer, opening a practice in Annapolis Royal, the former capital of the colony. Haliburton became a noted local businessman and a judge, but his great fame came from his writing. He wrote a number of books on history, politics, and farm improvement. He rose to…

Maps and engravings by C.W. Torbett Vol. I has a frontis. folding map of N.S., P.E.I. and part of N.B. plus 2 plans of Louisburg (Not mentioned in instructions to binder.). Vol. II has frontis of Halifax, 3 plates (Province House, Windsor, and Annapolis), and 3 maps (routes of Shubenacadie Canal Line). The text covers the period from 1497 to 1828 and is considered a fine example of both scholarship and craftsmanship in the quality of the printing and accompanying engravings. Unfortunately for Joseph Howe, the publisher, it proved to be a financial disaster. This first edition published by him is exceedingly scarce.

Description:
In The Attaché Haliburton presents his hero as a member of the American legation to the Court of Saint Jamses. This is undoubtedly Haliburtons most ambitious work. In it he tried to improve on his reputation as a satirist by turning his examination of human foibles from their peripheral manifestations in Nova Scotia to their centre in Britain. The Attaché became a respectable popular and literary success. Even the most condemnatory critics in Britain found much to praise in the books, and the sales, though smaller than those of The Clockmaker, were quite substantial. Haliburton still remained the seemingly inexhaustible raconteur and master of racy frontier diction and the excellence of this quality was by itself sufficient to obscure the fact that much more often in this work than in The Clockmaker the gap in probability between the anecdote and the meaning which the author applied to it had become too great for ready acceptance.

He was one of the founders of the N.B. Historical Society and was from 1901 to 1903 its president; and he contributed to its transactions many historical papers. [Morgan 1912] Robert Grant Haliburton was born in Windsor, Nova Scotia. His father was Judge Haliburton who wrote the best selling Clockmaker series about the humorous adventures of the Sam Slick character. Like his father he graduated from University of King's College and was part of the local volunteer militia where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He was a lawyer, called to the bar in 1853. He became famous after founding the Canada First organization that saw English Canadian society as the…
