Short Title Catalogue H-1177. Very Scarce. Bookplate of Harry H. Whittingham on front pastedown with penned notation that this book was re-bound in 1954; penned notations on title page and last text pages (dated 1720) by an early owner, John Farrell - one such notation next to the H. (of R. H.) on the title mistakenly indicates the author was named Howell and another notation reads " Observe the character of the Commonwealth Parliament though from a Royalist".

Contains 62 pp. including Index, light foxing on end pages small stain on rear cover, minor wear. The songs in this volume were sung by the students at the Calhoun Colored School of Calhoun, Lowndes County, Alabama and compiled by Hallowell. The school was founded in 1892 by Charlotte R. Thorn of New Haven, Connecticut and Mabel W. Dillingham of Boston, Massachusetts. Hallowell (of West Medford, MA) wrote the Preface to this work that contains more than 50 songs with music and lyrics. Very scarce first edition of this important work.

First Edition, First Issue with the two-line printer's imprint on the copyright page repeated with an ampersand on page 422. Some shelf wear and rubbing at top and bottom of spine and corners; front hinge broken; some pencilled underlining and side-lining in text. Previous owner's signature (J. M. Davis) in pencil on rear end paper. Holmes served as chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court from 1899 until 1902. In 1902 he was appointed to the United States Supreme Court by President Theodore Roosevelt, a position he held until his retirement in 1932.

The Burning Wheel was published in 1916 and is bound in beige wraps with paper labels on the front cover and the spine; small chip at base of spine, minor soiling to covers, a few small marginal tears to the rear cover (which exceeds the dimensions of the text pages). This is Number 7 of the "Adventurers All" series. The Defeat of Youth is bound in decorative green floral wraps with paper labels on the front cover and the spine. Spine slightly askew, joints rubbed, edges of covers have minor chipping and rubbing and have some darkening. Engraved bookplate on front pastedown.
