Description:
Jerusalem Israel: No Publisher Noted, 1955. A typed letter, dated Jerusalem 10 July 1955 addressed to Abraham Tulin of New York. "Dear Abe, Thank you for your letter of 22 June with its enclosures. You have done a real mitzva by sending me your review of Lippmann's book. I have gulped it down thirstily during a brief Sabbath respite between two furious spells of the election campaign. The trouble is that since I became what I now am, I have practically stopped doing any general reading because of sheer physical lack of time. As I cannot consume books in bulk, their compressed substance is to me invaluable. Your review is, indeed, a marvel of compression - judicious and incisive. As I rush through the first three columns, I said to myself: "Walter Lippmann is inviting democratic civilisation to jump from the frying-pan of tribulation right into the fire of destruction," and felt intellectually terribly depressed. And then, on reaching your searching criticism in the fourth column, I found you… Read More

Description:
Baltimore: Printed By W. Pechin for D. Porter, at the Observatory, Federal Hill, 1797. 268 pages. Phillip Sloan in his "Evolutionary Thought Before Darwin" comments on this work that "...The dominance of some form of pre-existence theory of generation between roughly 1670 and the 1740s provides some explanation for the lack of efforts among natural philosophers to develop transformist theories of species origins in the same period. A notable exception to this claim was the Epicurean cosmology resembling some aspects of Lucretius's poem, developed by the French philosophe Benôit de Maillet (1656–1738) in his privately circulated manuscript Telliamed that was known in French circles for ten years before its publication in 1748 (Maillet, 1748). In this work de Maillet offered bold speculations on how sea creatures developed into land forms over time. Nonetheless, the period before the middle of the eighteenth century was dominated by a theory of organic generation that effectively precluded the… Read More
