Description:
Daguerreotypes (4) & Tintype (1); Sixth-plates (4) & ninth-plate (1)A collection of cased images (four daguerreotypes and one tintype) showing Euro-American subjects holding raised beadwork purses created by the Haudenosaunee (People of the Longhouse), also known as the Six Nations (Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk and Tuscarora Nations). Based on traditional patterns and fashioned by Haudenosaunee women using Venetian beads and metal sequins, these purses and other souvenirs (pin cushions, frames etc.) flourished in popularity toward the end of the 19th century, as tourists flocked to Niagara Falls and the surrounding area. Earlier, mid-19th century images such as these are more uncommon, and reflect the objects' significance to the individual owners.
