An exceptionally attractive example, handsomely bound as an Eton College leaving present soon after publication.George Badger, East India Company chaplain and Arabist, was sent by William Howley, Archbishop of Canterbury, as delegate to the Eastern Churches, and more especially the Nestorians of Kurdistan in 1842 and again in 1850. Apart from his travels in Kurdistan the work contains accounts of visits to Antioch and the Black Sea. The Nestorians exercised a fascination for Anglicans in the nineteenth century from their having been virtually isolated from the rest of Christendom since the fifth century. Blackmer 62.

First edition. pp. xxiv, 309, 8 plans and one general map in two parts at the rear; bound in the publisher's original yellow pictorial biedermeier boards, slightly bumped and worn at corners; overall an excellent copy. This rare early Baedeker was translated by Professor Klein from the fifth German edition published in the same year and was the second French title to be published by Baedeker. The first was published in 1832 under the title " Voyage du Rhin de Mayence a Cologne." However this is considered to be the first true French Baedeker as much of the guide had been re-written. Baedeker had also introduced more town plans which include Cologne and Strassbourg.
