Description:
Together five works in one volume. 12mo. 160 x 100 mm.; 6 ½ x 4 inches. Bound in contemporary leather spine and tips, marbled paper boards; spine leather showing wear and some cracking, otherwise a sound copy. Interest group of pamphlets prepared for public consumption and at the behest of the British Museum and the Louvre in Paris. For Panizzi and Madden 1851was a critical time in the history of British Museum as new space was required to manage the growing collections and the public was clamoring access to the collections. These pamphlets were published to demonstrate to the Trustees the growing collections of books and manuscripts that were entering the Museum and that a decision about the new reading room need to be taken. The Synopsis of the Contents of the British Museum was published as a reminder of the extent of the collection including details of all the rooms in the museum that held natural history collections and antiquities. .
