The corners are rubbed and the spine ends scuffed and tatty. There is splitting to both spine edges from the top and from the bottom. Both joints are tender and the binding is loose but holding. Prev owner's signature to front pastedown and a rubber stamps to ffep. A couple of the prelim pages are starting to detach from the bottom. Isolated instances of brown staining to the text. 402pp + catalogue. Pages rough-cut. All four maps present and undamaged. Numerous b/w plates. Fair to good.

Criticised in the English press, the publisher has written an explanatory note of his reason for publishing in which he states that the veracity of the facts are indisputable whilst the authors 'anti-English' opinions, whilst irritating to the British subject, will not affect the British cause. During four expeditions to Central Asia, he made the Transhimalaya known in the West and located sources of the Brahmaputra, Indus and Sutlej Rivers. He also mapped lake Lop Nur, and the remains of cities, grave sites and the Great Wall of China in the deserts of the Tarim Basin.
