Edinburgh: Printed by James Ballantyne and Co. for Archibald Constable and Company [et al.], 1815. 8vo, [viii], 443, [1]. Near-contemporary navy calf, spine divided by raised bands tooled in gilt, two compartments lettered in gilt, the others tooled in gilt and blind, boards elaborately decorated with a series of blind patterned frames enclosing a central panel scalloped in blind, the whole bordered with gilt rules and corner pieces, marbled edges and endpapers, blue silk bookmark ribbon. A little light spotting. Spine slightly faded and rubbed. Ink gift inscription signed ‘William Henniker 1829’ to front flyleaf. A handsome example of the ‘fourth edition’, in fact the third, because the previous two were separate issues of the same printing, as per Todd & Bowden. The six cantos, which Scott claimed would be ‘my last poetical adventure at least upon a large scale’ describe the return of Robert the Bruce from exile and his successful… Read More
