He was called "The Fighting Parson" by his American compatriots and denounced as the "high Priest of the Rebellion" by the British and the Tories. The Reverend James caldwell (1734-1781) was a minister of the Presbyterian Church in Elizabeth Town, New Jersey. He was an early champion of the cause of liberty, then an active participant in the long and difficult struggle of the American Revolution. While he was stationed as chaplain at Morristown, his wife was accidentally shot and killed by a British soldier under disputed circumstances during the Battle of Connecticut Farms; Caldwll himself was killed in November, 1781 by an American sentry at Elizabethtown when he refused to have a package he was carrying inspected.
