Several notes and smudges in the margins of the texts. Notes are present on the inside front binding and on the front free end paper. Illustrations throughout. Volume is slightly cocked. Six pages of ads included. From the Introduction, "We have said geology treats of the history of the past conditions of the earth and its inhabitants. The evidences of the past conditions are found in its present structure. But, to understand this structure, we must observe the manner in which similar structure is formed under our eyes. Thus, observation of causes now in operation constitutes the only solid foundation of geology."

The dark covers are in good shape with title in gold on front and on spine. There is some fraying along edges. The spine is frayed and worn, especially along edge with front board. The binding is loose, with the front hinge starting to detach. All pages are bound, although the textblock is loose in spots. The front end papers are creased and soiled, and the first few pages are soiled in spots. Otherwise, the interior pages are generally clear and bright; most have no makings or foxing. The back endpaper has some writing in pencil. The book contains 384 black and white figures, many of these are in very good condition and are interesting depictions of geological processes and ancient life.
