Seeley. Rebound in old 1/2 leather. 27cm. Severely defective -- lacks the title-leaf, 15 (of the 16) plates, including all 12 hand-colored plates) and the folding map. A few other leaves are detached, chipped or otherwise worn. The binding is also quite worn (much of the backstrip is chipped away and the front and back covers are detached). A chance to own the text part of the first edition plus one uncolored plate ("Outline of Ascension Island" facing P. 385).

Latrobe's account - characteristic of the man, "devout, but most companionable, and energetic in mind and body" - is much enhanced by the superbly coloured plates after sketches by the author himself and John Melville, Government Surveyor of the Cape, who accompanied him. Latrobe was sent out to South Africa in response to the request of Moravian missionaries at Genadendal and Groenekloof for a minister to visit them. "The Governor of the Cape had expressed a wish that a third station should be opened, and in order to choose a site the author travelled through a large part of the country right up to the Fish River. Prideaux describes this work as 'a good specimen of the early literature on missionary effort, giving a sufficiently vivid record of personal experiences, native customs, and objects of natural interest that come under his notice...'The author was sent to South Africa by the United Brethren to assess possible locations for a new missionary station and to assist in the security of the existing stations at Groenekloof and Gnadendal. He travelled through a large part of the country right up to the Fish River and then returned to Cape Town by way of Plettenberg and Mossel Bays.
