In 1878 Cyprus, a neglected and unimportant province of the Ottoman Empire, suddenly sprung into international prominence when the Sultan was persuaded to hand it over to be administered in the name of of Queen Victoria in exchange for British promises him to protect him against his Russian enemies. A leading British photographer landing there two months after the arrival of the occupying troops travelled through it from end to end and soon had in print a book in which 60 photographs of the new possession were accompanied by an explanatory text.
